But then there is the Mapes. For many here -- 57 percent of all residents, according to a recent poll commissioned by preservationists -- it is hard to cheer for a Reno without the story Mapes Hotel. Built in by Charles Mapes with 's Art Deco plans, it was the first hotel in the country designed to provide rooms, a casino and live entertainment under one roof.

Its Sky Room, a glass promenade on the top floor with vast views of the Sierra Nevada, was the place to go in the 's. Later, locals clamored to book the room for proms and weddings. The hotel, which closed in after years of decline, became a national landmark inand in it was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's list of the 11 most endangered historic sites in the country.

The building is too high. Preservationists over the plans would have fit quite nicely and defend the building's historic value. But Mike Reed, dean of the business school at the University of Nevada in Reno, said that many people in Reno had become weary of the Mapes and the on-again, off-again plans to save it.
